DWARSKIJKERS | CROSSVIEWERS
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3
DOORS OPEN: 07:15pm | START EXHIBITION: 07:45pm
WITH JAAP HENK HOEPMAN, ESTHER POLAK AND IVAR VAN BEKKUM AND JACCO BORGGREVE
Will the speed of digital development soon be gaining on us? Will it become a distinct part of our reality or will it remain by illusions for now? Illusions is the theme of this year’s Media Art Festival: a great opportunity for a Cross-viewers-evening to get acquainted with themes related, such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, the climate crisis, data and privacy. Are these all threats? Or sources of inspiration and new opportunities for art and culture? Especially recommended for those who experience “cold feet” regarding the subject – it is an opportunity to get acquainted with new phenomena that will also influence the world of art and culture in either way.
The evening begins with a tour of the MAF Young Masters exhibition where the young artists will be present to elaborate on their work. Jaap Henk Hoepman, associate professor of privacy enhancing protocols and privacy by design in the Digital Security Group at Radboud University in Nijmegen, will subsequently provide a general introduction on the context of digital developments and how people, art and culture relate to it.
Additionally, artist duo Esther Polak and Ivar van Bekkum will offer insight in the developments of the past and present and how we relate to art and technology with the use of their own work. At both lectures the audience will have a key role; everyone is free to share their experiences and ask questions.
To complete the evening, it ends with a performance by digital artist Jacco Borggreve who has developed a work especially for Dwarskijkers/Cross-viewers from his artist in residency in Merida Mexico.
