Ten Dutch and German makers worked together for ten days in August 2021, during a collaborative artist-in-residence at the new maker’s spot Het Lage Noorden near Marrum on the Frisian Wadden coast. Various guides shared their knowledge of the environment with the makers and invited creative discourse about what we as humans do with it by eating, living and working in it. The insights from those meetings served as food and inspiration for the group of image makers, visual artists, composers and music producers. Together they created an audiovisual experience, which will be presented in 2022 at LUNA Leeuwarden and the European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück, Germany. For LUNA, the Marrumer setting near the dike, with a watchtower of which both the urban Leeuwarden and the Wadden Islands played a role in the presentation in the distance, has been translated into an urban variant. The public is welcome on the railway terrace of the Stationskwartier and on the viewing platform of the brutalist stairwell.

The makers are Henning Bischof, Marinus Groen, Stephan Thierbach, Nora Beyer, Esther Adam, Nathan Koonstra, Katie Ceekay, Hassan Scheidaei, Jochem Knoef and Anne Fie Salverda.

The KOMPOST- Nahrung für den Geist project is co-financed in the context of the INTERREG V A Program Deutschland-Nederland with resources from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and by the provinces of Drenthe, Fryslân and Groningen as well as the federal state of Niedersachsen. Further support from the Prince Bernhard Cultuurfonds Fryslân.

KOMPOST is a temporary, experimental sanctuary of the Popfabryk for image makers and sound artists in or from Friesland. For each edition, two or more makers from the two disciplines, image and sound, are invited to work together on a composition for a week.
