MARTIJN VAN BACHUM
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21 | 20:30 HOURS
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7 | 14:00, 16:00 en 19:00 HOURS
With the performance IMPROVISUAL Martijn van Bachum creates data visualisations by playing improvised music. During a live performance, every note is visualised in a projection. A data visualisation is built up during a music piece, which means that you can experience the music in the now, but also read back what happened. Nuances in the music are being translated to detailed graphs.
With this work Martijn researches the tension between systems, rules, patterns and structures on the one hand and intuition and improvisation on the other. The music consists of soundscapes which are a combination of sequences played on a modular analogue synthesizer and improvised drum parts. What is played influences what is shown in the visualisations, but the visuals influence what is played too. This results in an interesting feedback loop.
In the past year Martijn posted more than 30 IMPROVISUALS on improvisual.nl and Instagram. During the performance at MAF he will show a selection.
